The Buffalo Bills made a move Monday which was apparently long in coming. The team announced a few minutes before the start of "Monday Night Football" to have released quarterback Nathan Peterman.
Selected by the bills in the fifth round of the 2017 draft, Peterman's stay at Buffalo was one of the most loaded mandates in league history mistakes. He had been recruited as a potential player behind Tyrod Taylor last year, but with Buffalo's troubled attack, he was promoted to incumbent for a mid-season game against the Chargers. Things went wrong.
Peterman may have had the worst game in NFL history in his first start, having been intercepted five times in 14 pass attempts while he only thrown for 66 yards. He was benched for Taylor at halftime and Taylor resumed the starting job until he injured himself later in the season. For the season, Peterman has only completed 24 of 49 passes for 252 yards, two touchdowns and the five selections above.
Buffalo exchanged Taylor for the Browns in the offseason, then signed AJ McCarron and traded against Josh Allen, which seems to mean the end of Peterman's term. But then they gave Peterman the starting position in the year. Once again, things went wrong. Peterman started the first game of the season with Buffalo, completing just five of 18 passes for 24 yards and two interceptions against the Ravens. He was benched in favor of Allen and took his place on the bench.
A few weeks later, the team recruited fellow QB Derek Anderson as a mentor for Allen, apparently pushing Peterman back on the depth chart. But then, Allen is hurt. And the Bills decided to start Anderson just days after joining the team. Anderson started two games, but is also injured. Peterman had to start again at the 9th day. He completed 31 of 49 passes against the Bears, but those passes generated only 188 yards. He was intercepted three times without touching a goal. . Buffalo then signed and started mate Matt Barkley in place of Peterman in Week 10 and then launched Jets 41-10.
Not even a day later, they decided that they no longer needed Peterman on their list. His career with Bills ended with four starts, eight appearances, 68 finishes on 130 passes (52.3%), 548 passing yards (4.2 per attempt), three touchdowns and 12 interceptions. His score of 32.5 smugglers is several points worse than he would have been if he had managed to poke the ball at every game. Of the 426 players who made at least 125 assists in their NFL career this figure ranks 424th.
