Bushra Abdi and Zeynab "Hapsa" Abdalla, both of Shakopee, were reported missing around 3 am on Saturday, Bushra's sister Habsa Abdi told the Star Tribune. Abdalla, who visits Hapsa, drove from her workplace to Amazon to a Chaska retirement home where Bushra worked, according to Habsa Abdi.
At 2:47 pm, Abdalla called Bushra to tell him that she was waiting for him in front of the retirement home. A few minutes later, Bushra's phone went out, Habsa Abdi told the Star Tribune. Habsa Abdi said that she thought the two cousins were going to a gas station to buy snacks when something happened to them along the way.
Since their sudden disappearance, a frenzied search was under way to find the two teenagers. This search ended catastrophically Sunday night when researchers found traces of tires leading from a nearby highway to the pond.
After several hours of research in the pond, officials used a loudspeaker to inform the crowd of several hundred people, mostly from the Somali-American community, that a body had been found in the submerged vehicle. Moments later, authorities announced that a second body had been found in the nearby water.
Chaska police confirmed the identity of the two women in a statement Monday afternoon.
The Anoka County Medical Examiner's Office said on Monday that the two deaths were drownings.
"We are not neglecting anything," said Chaska Police Chief Scott Knight. "It seems like an accident, but we will know for sure in the next few days."
