SANTA CLARA – A body found on Saturday in the waters near Alviso has been identified as the 49ers who disappeared after leaving Levi's Stadium in a match played on 12 November, authorities said.
The coroner's office of the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner Tuesday identified Ian Powers, 32, as the person whose body was found by divers at the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office. According to the coroner, the cause and mode of death of Powers were accidental drownings.
On the basis of the coroner's findings, the Santa Clara police closed their investigation.
Powers, a resident of Spokane, Washington, attended the 49ers' football game Monday night on November 12 with his girlfriend, according to Santa Clara Police. His girlfriend told the police that he had left his seat to go to the bathroom in the fourth quarter and that he had never been back there.
The last communication between Powers and his family took place around 10 pm, near Old Glory Lane and Great America Parkway, outside Levi's Stadium.
Police were alerted to Powers' disappearance the next day and began searching for him, said Captain Wahid Kazem.
Powers' vehicle was found at the spot where he had parked near the stadium. There was no sign of foul play. On Thursday, the Santa Clara police released a surveillance video showing Powers leaving Levi's Stadium and walking on a bridge between many other supporters.
Family members and friends told the police that Powers' disappearance was "completely out of the ordinary"
His body was found by a group of duck hunters in waters at low tide, according to Santa Clara police.
The boat launching ramp of Alviso Marina is located about 4 km from the Levi stadium.
The police said Powers wore a red T-shirt, a red cap and blue jeans for the last time.
Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Powers is asked to contact the Santa Clara Police at 408 615-5580.
