The body of a 19-year-old woman who had been missing for a month was found this week in the desert outside Phoenix, authorities said Wednesday.
Kiera Lanae Bergman's body was discovered on Monday afternoon near National Highway 85 in Buckeye, the Phoenix Police Department said. Bergman, who was last seen on August 4, was found about 45 minutes west of his home, Phoenix TV reported.
"Right now, we're just waiting for them to release the body," said Chris Bragg, Bergman's father, to the Republic of Arizona. "They are waiting for specialists to come in. Take her home."
The police told the newspaper that it was an active homicide investigation and did not say whether suspects had been identified. The police did not disclose details about Bergman's death or the length of his body in the desert.
An autopsy was to be performed by the medical examiner, the police said.
Bergman's family and friends have written condolences on social media. It read, "My sun is gone."
On the day of Bergman's disappearance, she had texted her roommate and best friend, Destiny Hall-Chand, saying that she was meeting "a guy she met in a shop," reported KPHO.
Hall-Chand told the station that the text seemed strange and out of place for Bergman.
The woman, originally from San Diego, moved to Phoenix in March to be with her boyfriend, Jon Clark. At a vigil on August 11, family members told Arizona Republic that Bergman had later broken up with his boyfriend and had moved in with Hall-Chand.
Clark, 23, was arrested during police investigation on unrelated charges, Phoenix FOX10 reported. According to reports, a search warrant on the car he shared with Bergman revealed evidence of identity theft and counterfeiting.
Clark remained in jail on a $ 25,000 bail, KPHO reported.
The investigation into Bergman's death is ongoing, the Phoenix police said.
The authorities asked anyone with information about the case to quote Silent Witness to 480-WITNESS.
