San Francisco police identified the headless, handless torso they had recovered last month from an aquarium in the home of a missing man.
As expected, Brian Egg, the owner who had not been seen since July, is the deceased whose remains were found floating in a tank on August 15, said a San Francisco police spokesman at PEOPLE.
The tank was located in a hidden area of the house, more than a week after friends and relatives complained about the 65-year-old's disappearance.
The San Francisco Medical Examiner confirms to PERSON that the torso in the tank belonged to Egg.
The police were first warned that something might not happen at the end of July, when suspicious friends asked for a check on Egg's welfare, according to the spokesman.
Twice, the authorities were sent home, where they knocked on the door and left without entering, according to the spokesman.
On August 14, anxious neighbors called 911 after seeing two men entering Egg's residence.
There was also a cleaning truck from a crime scene cleaning company stationed outside, according to the spokesman.
Cops arrived and arrested Robert McCaffrey, 52, who was inside. A few hours later, they arrested Lance Silva, 39, in a nearby hotel.
The investigators searched the residence, finding no sign of egg, but evidence of cleaning products used.
There was also a stench in the house, which the police eventually found in a hidden part of the house using a dead dog.

According to an affidavit of arrest obtained by PEOPLE, someone had used the Egg credit card to buy a BMW. A car salesman identified Silva as the person who bought the vehicle.
The police further alleged that Silva used the stolen credit card to pay the cleaning company to the crime scene.
San Francisco residents McCaffrey and Silva have been arrested on suspicion of homicide, fraud, theft, identity theft and elder abuse.
At this point, the District Attorney's Office in San Francisco has not yet filed a complaint, claiming that the investigation into the murder is continuing.
Silva has been detained since 27 August on suspicion of theft, embezzlement and identity theft, according to the prison's archives.
People have not managed to reach McCaffrey for a comment; he was released without bail.
It was unclear whether either of them retained the services of a legal advisor who could comment on them.
