Braves manager Brian Snitker made the tough decision to leave Freddie Freeman and Ender Inciarte at home on Thursday night.
This put additional pressure on Julio Teheran, who was perhaps launching for his spot in the playoff rotation. Tehran had a mistake, but maintained its excellent performance against the Mets.
His attack and pad could not support their weight, and the Mets won 4-1 behind a three-run Devin Mesoraco. They won the three-game series and kept the Braves tied with Colorado with 89 wins.
The Braves finished 13-6 against the Mets in 2018. They are 48-25 in Eastern Newfoundland with three games to play.
Jason Vargas, who was anything but brilliant against the Braves, launched seven shutouts. He entered with an ERA of 6.14 in three starts against the visitors.
Less than 24 hours after being repressed by Jacob deGrom, the Braves bats simply did not have any. Vargas allowed only one shot per 4-2 / 3 innings. Ryan Flaherty's third single – his first in 23 at-bats – was the team's only knockout.
"I want to play all the guys this weekend (in Philadelphia) because we will have a few days off," Snitker said. "Today was planned. Last night we were beaten by the best pitcher of the match. Tehran is the favorite for fourth place in the playoffs. He is the starter of the franchise five times. He has played better lately and has no experience to take into account. His first run is usually his worst, which is not an ideal quality for a reliever.
The Braves could use Mike Foltynewicz, Anibal Sanchez, Kevin Gausman and Teheran as starters with Sean Newcomb and Touki Toussaint on hold. Snitker repeated several times that their rotation depended on the clashes, and it should be noted that Tehran's figures at Coors Field are much better than its production at Dodger Stadium.
