Rebellion's publisher of video games, comics and books is expanding to film and television with the launch of a $ 100 million studio, which Variety said will serve the company's next film projects.
The company has purchased a former newspaper store in Didcot, West London, which will provide 220,000 square feet of space and a 25,000 square foot sound stage.
Rebellion is known for video games as Elite shooter and Alien vs Predator, as well as comics like 2000 AD which has its own crowd of characters and stories. Variety indicates that this new studio will be used for two upcoming adaptations of the publisher's intellectual property: a television show by Judge Dredd entitled Judge Dredd: Mega City, as well as the adaptation of another comic dating from 2000, Rogue Riderwho will be barred by Warcraft and Mute director Duncan Jones.
Variety note that studios are rare in England and that the main sound scenes are expanding to meet the demand for filming space. Talk to VarietyRebellion co-founder Jason Kingsley explained that the decision to open his own production site was due to the lack of available space in the country. He also cited the company's vast catalog of "good stories", which could help it provide material for streaming services like Amazon and Netflix.
The rise of streaming services has led to a growing demand for new programs to fuel subscriber growth. Companies like Amazon, Hulu and Netflix have each invested billions of dollars in new, original productions, while Apple and Disney are expected to unveil their own platforms next year. Keeping its own workspace would allow Rebellion to closely monitor its properties by making them in-house, where it does not have to compete for space with other projects.
