On September 1, Joel Alsup and Lindsey Wilkerson tied the knot where they met as children: the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
More than 25 years after their first meeting, the first day of National Childhood Awareness Month, Alsup and Wilkerson have dedicated themselves to each other in the same hospital where they struggled this terrible disease as a child. Joel with osteosarcoma and Lindsey face acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Alsup, then 7 years old, had to be amputated from his arm before being cancer free. "When I met this guy, when I was in treatment, I admired him," Wilkerson said. "I admired him, I thought he was an incredible person. We have grown in our friendship over the years.
The pair lost touch when they went to separate colleges, but met after accepting jobs at St. Jude's. When Wilkerson spotted Alsup during his tours, their romance resumed where she had stopped. "I finally had the guts to tell him that I loved him, not only that I loved him," Alsup told WREG 3. "Fortunately, she felt the same way.
Other former patients served as weddings for the couple, and they made their way to chaplain Brent Powell, whom Alsup had met during his stay at the hospital.
"I would never have understood that I would be sitting here today at [Joel’s] aside as his wife, having the privilege of getting married because of the place that has saved our lives, "said Wilkerson.
"Now it's up to us to pass on this gift," she said. The couple is trying to educate the public about the St. Jude Walk / Hike on Saturday, September 29th.
