The man was bitten at noon ET at Newcomb Hollow Beach, said Wellfleet police. Witnesses told police officers that the victim and another man boarded 30 meters from the beach when the incident occurred.
Arthur Medici, 26, of Revere, Mass., Received first aid, including CPR, but died at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. His name was released by District Deputy Attorney, Cape and Islands, Tara Miltimore.
Bunker Hill Community College issued a statement stating that Medici, an engineering transfer option, was registered part-time in the spring.
Chris Hartsgrove, deputy chief of Cape Cod National Seashore, said the wounds appeared to come from a shark. The official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.
Wellfleet resident and user Robert Bessler told CNN that the attack had put the local surf community to the test.
"It's like being struck by lightning," said Bessler, 34. "You hear about it, it does not seem real, you imagine it will never be you."
"It's kind of sinking into the fact that the danger is real," he added.
Bessler said he planned to take a week or two off on surfing, but that he would likely resume the sport.
"Overall, I do not think we can do much about the situation – it's their home, the sharks live here and we're not really on the menu, but unfortunately when they do a test and decide not to their menu, it turns out that it's pretty devastating in general. "
Shark sightings have increased in the region as the gray seal population has increased.
The last deadly shark attack in Massachusetts dates back to 1936, according to the Florida Program for Shark Research of the Florida Museum of Natural History.
Gavin Naylor, director of the program, said such attacks are "very rare" and that "shark attacks in summer are a direct result of the increase in the number of people and the number of animals in the water ".
Naylor advised people not to go to water alone or at dawn or dusk. He also said that the strong presence of seals and crowds of moving and jumping fish may indicate that a shark is nearby.
Officials have issued warning signs and published brochures, said Hartsgrove.
Officials closed the beach to swimmers Sunday.
"I do not know what the city really is supposed to do," Bessler said. "They can not take away sharks, they can not take off the surfers and they can not remove the seals."
