A dream vacation has turned into a nightmare for passengers on a Carnival cruise Sunday night.

According to CBS New York, a defective telephone switchboard caused the carnival Sunshine shortly after the start of the week-long trip to Port Canaveral, Florida.

"I changed places, I fell from my seat," said Kyla Williams, a female passenger. "It was really the boat that rolled to the side and everything was falling from there, and it was something you will never forget."

She also said that her husband had to hold her up so that she would not fall.

Another passenger, David Crews, told WKMG-TV, a CBS affiliate in Orlando, that he had "not thought of anything at first, since it is not unusual for ships to sway".

"But it did not go back," he said. "He continued to lean over. Plates and cutlery began to slide tables. Then the tables themselves started to slide. The glasses and plates began to fall and break. At this point, it was pure chaos. Cree. Weep. Panic."

The teams also shared several photos of the incident, which showed a variety of dishes and other supplies that collapsed on the floor.

According to a Carnival statement obtained by PEOPLE, the boat would have landed after about a minute and then continued as usual.

"The safety of the ship was never a problem, and our officers quickly intervened to remedy the situation," reads the statement.

A passenger tweeted, "Get me out of this Carnival Sunshine ship. We just list so badly that I'm not comfortable being in this [ship] more. The water is exhausted [of] the broken pools in my room and the spilled drink in my suitcase!

A few days later, as an excuse, the guests received a 50 USD credit on board, but many still chose to leave the ship earlier.
