"We tell the story in Neil Armstrong's perspective … and just try to demystify that moment of the story, to show what it really took and how difficult it really was." ", said director Damien Chazelle at the Hollywood Reporter.
The new film by Damien Chazelle, First man, according to the cast and the director, is more than a biopic of the first American astronaut to land on the moon.
"We tell the story in the perspective of Neil Armstrong and his wife, Janet, and their families, and just try to demystify that moment in history, to show what it really took and to what point it was difficult, "said the director. The Hollywood Reporter at the Toronto Film Festival.
For Ryan Gosling, who plays Armstrong in the film, the most difficult part of getting involved in the spacesuit was "Neil's and Janet's sons were going to see him".
Actress Olivia Hamilton, who plays Pat White, the wife of astronaut Ed White, added, "Playing a real person whose family is going to see the film has had the impression of having raised the stakes enormously and above all I will not give anything. As a character who suffers the dramatic impact of the mission, I felt the duty to do justice to the woman. "
Chazelle explained to THR how he took a "well-documented event" in American history and gave the public a different perspective that is not as well known.
"What we thought was the only thing we could add to the equation, which would not just replicate things we've already seen, would really be telling an unfamiliar story, moments I did not know really, "he said. The time he spent alone at Little West Crater and what happened there, which may have crossed his mind, what the moon might have looked like.
"I think these very private moments, emotional or psychological, I think Ryan and I and all of us wanted to try to become our guide on how to do it," he added.
