Amazon's quest for the construction of a second headquarters, dubbed HQ2, may well succeed.
According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, Amazon, based in Seattle, would be involved in "late-stage talks" with officials from a small group of localities, including New York, Dallas and Crystal City, in Virginia, near Washington. DC Amazon announced more than a year ago its intention to build a second headquarters, and in January its choices were reduced to a list of 20 finalists. Amazon said its new headquarters would employ up to 50,000 people and generate up to $ 5 billion in investments over 20 years.
No Bay Area locations have been added to Amazon's list of finalists. San Francisco, Oakland, Fremont, Richmond and Concord had made a joint offer at headquarters, while San Jose had submitted its own offer. A Los Angeles-area bid was the only one in California to be on Amazon's list of sites for HQ2 headquarters.
The Journal reported that negotiations between Amazon and the New York, Dallas and Virginia sites are in different phases due to tax incentives that Amazon seeks to obtain in exchange for the construction of its new facilities.
Amazon has remained largely silent on the progress of its QG2 research and has only stated that it would decide on the new headquarters by the end of the year.
