The Cleveland Brown have spent years in perpetual reset mode. And now, even in a season in which the emergence of rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield has provided glimmers of hope, they again pressed the reset button, deciding on Monday to Fire Chief Hue Jackson.
Brown's decision was confirmed by a person familiar with the situation. It was not immediately clear who the Browns would hire as an acting coach. The team also ousted Todd Haley from his offensive coordinator, according to the person close to the situation. Haley, along with defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, is a former NFL head coach.
Jackson was in his third season as a Browns coach and was 3-36-1. The Browns are 2-5-1 this season and are on a three-game losing streak.

The owners, Jimmy and Dee Haslam, have decided not to return Jackson after last season, even after the Browns have won 1-31 in the last two seasons, including 0-16 last season. They entrusted the rebuilding of the team to a new general manager, John Dorsey, who chose to use the best selection in the final standings of the Mayfield NFL draft, winner of the Heisman Trophy of Oklahoma.
It seemed like a wise choice, as Mayfield looked like a star in the making during his rookie season. He replaced veteran Tyrod Taylor in a match against the New York Jets in which Taylor was injured in the lead and led the Browns to their first win since the 2016 season. He also led a win over the Baltimore Ravens who tied the Browns record at 2-2-1 and made some particularly optimistic observers pause.
But the Browns regressed to become, finally, Brown in the weeks that followed. They suffered losses against the Los Angeles Chargers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Pittsburgh Steelers. Jackson spoke of becoming more involved in the offense, essentially putting him at odds with Haley and establishing a potential choice between the two men.

Rather than choosing, the Browns simply got rid of both.
According to the person close to the situation, the Haslam weighed the decision in consultation with Dorsey and decided that even though a change of coach in the season was far from ideal, they did not want things to happen. remain as between Jackson and Haley, potentially putting Mayfield's development at risk. The Browns went back to the coach carousel.
In the future, it will be important to determine what is best for Mayfield. He is the centerpiece of the Browns' latest rebuilding effort, and Jackson's dismissal makes it clear that all decisions will be made in the best interests of the Browns.
Jackson's ousting comes a day after the Cleveland basketball team fired coach Tyronn Lue while the Cavaliers were 0-6 this season.
