Chris Martin of Coldplay was left to calm the situation during the event in Central Park, New York
A collapse of the barrier at the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park, New York, yesterday (30 September) caused mass panic and confusion among festival-goers.
The fans mistook the collapse of the barrier as being "rifle noises", which caused many people to rush to the exit in panic.
The resulting confusion abruptly halted the event in the midst of fears for the safety of the 60,000 supporters attending the event, people who were injured during the charge with witnesses at the event describing the scene as "A jostling".
It was left to Chris Martin of Coldplay to calm the situation by taking the stage with NYPD Deputy Chief Kathleen O'Reilly to reassure the fans. Martin was the curator of this year's event.
Martin said, "I think what happened is a barrier that has fallen. Of course, people were scared and things like that. But no one is trying to hurt anyone. Are you all safe, okay?
O'Reilly added: "No shots were fired" and Global Citizen organizers approached Twitter to say "[everyone] is safe "before the continuation of the event.
Later, festival organizers tweeted that an undetermined number of people had been injured when the barrier collapsed, while thanking the first responders "who assured the safety of all and allowed the festival to continue".
The Weekend, Janet Jackson, Cardi B – her first set since her delivery – and Janelle Monae were among the performers of the festival. The Weend cut his game because of the incident.
