DENVER (CBS4) – An online clothing company has removed a Halloween costume from its website after being criticized on social media. Yandy.com sold the costume that he described as being the "Yandy Brave Red Maiden Costume".
It is a much more revealing version of the dress worn by women subjugated by the authoritarian government in the Hulu dystopian series The Handmaid's Tale.
The description of the costume read as follows: "A disturbing dystopian future has emerged where women no longer have a voice. However, we say be bold and say what you think with this exclusive Brave Red Maiden costume.
Fans of the series have found the sexy costume uncomfortable and unpleasant.
"We are now beyond satire. The "Sexy" outfit of "Handmaid's Tale". There is nothing better than fighting patriarchy by sexualizing a show about misogyny and rape, "tweeted a person.
"Wait, is that … sexy maid? It's so far from the point that I can not even do it." someone else tweeted.
"I dress like an existential despair this Halloween," wrote another.
"Our society does not take rape of real women seriously, why should it take rape of fictitious women seriously?", Tweeted another person.
"I can not decide if this is missing the purpose of The Handmaid's Tale, or encapsulates it completely," another tweet.
"Dressing the servant's iconic red capes has become a symbol of women's resistance in the real world in recent months." TIME reported.
Protesters with Demand Justice dressed as maids stood in front of Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing room at Capitol Hill earlier this month. They protested against his views on abortion.
Yandy.com posted a statement on his Twitter page after the backlash.
"In the last few hours it has become clear that our" Yandy Brave Red Maiden Costume "is considered a symbol of women's oppression, rather than an expression of women's empowerment," the statement said.
