Residential renovation giant Lowe's has announced plans to stop transporting paint strippers containing two chemicals, responsible for dozens of deaths.

Lowe's will close 51 underperforming stores in North America, the company announced Monday.

The move – which includes the closing of 20 stores in the United States and 31 stores in Canada – is part of a strategic re-evaluation in which the company said it was planning to focus "on its stores the more profitable and improve the overall health of its store portfolio. "

"While decisions that impact our associates are never easy, store closures are a necessary part of our strategic re-evaluation as we focus on strengthening our business," said Marvin R. Ellison, President and Chief Executive Officer. Chief Executive Officer of Lowe, in a statement.

The company has announced its intention to close these stores by February 1, 2019. To carry out this process, Lowe's will carry out store closing sales for most of the affected sites.

Lowe's made big changes over the last year. After 13-year-old CEO Robert Niblock retired in March. Ellison, the former CEO of J.C. Penney, was hired in May. Since taking office, Ellison has implemented several reforms, including banning certain paint strippers and planning the closure of all Orchard Supply Hardware stores.

According to a February Securities and Exchange Commission report, Lowe's operates more than 2,000 stores in North America.

  • 5770 Read Blvd., New Orleans
  • 599 Thomas Burgin Pkwy, Quincy, Mass.
  • 4274 E Court St, Burton, Mich.
