EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Marshon Lattimore has seen some of the top receivers in the NFL in the first four games of the New Orleans Saints.
Mike Evans, Jarvis Landry, Julio Jones and Odell Beckham Jr. were all on the schedule, and Lattimore said he was looking forward to competing.
"I like this type of battles," he said.
During the first week, he struggled with Evans while the Saints high school looked terrible. During Week 2, he was significantly better, but did not follow Landry throughout the game. During the third week, he found Jones before the coaches hired him to cover rookie Calvin Ridley, as the other half-cornerers could not.
Then, on week 4 Sunday, Lattimore played well against Beckham in the Saints' 33-18 win, but that match was something different.
"This game, I told them in the sidelines, seemed to me the best I have felt all year," said Lattimore at the end of the match.
Lattimore thanked his masseuse for helping him feel better than he had done earlier this season.
"I felt good today for some reason," he said. "I guess fresh air or something."
At MetLife Stadium, this was the first game of the Saints' away season, but Lattimore later provided a more logical explanation of why he was not at his best in the first three games .
"I'm not going to apologize or anything like that, but my body was tired and I just had to take better care of it," he said. "I was on top, but it was as if I did not feel it .. But today, I felt a little like I was good."
Lattimore said the ankle injury he dealt with at the end of last season caused him to lose about two months of training. He started coming back to where he was physically last year, but he said last week's massage helped a lot. He met the masseuse through teammate Michael Thomas and only used it once last week during the ankle injury.
Meanwhile, even though Lattimore was feeling good, Saints defender coordinator Dennis Allen still felt the need to hit him after the game. Lattimore recovered scorched in the second quarter and returned the ball 37 yards before Giants quarterback Eli Manning pushed him out of bounds.
Allen joked in the locker room that Manning is "the slowest quarterback in the league". Lattimore defended himself by saying he wanted to go inside, but he saw Rhett Ellison's back preventing that option.
Lattimore's fumble recovery, which scored a goal on the field, as well as his performance to limit Beckham were among the key factors in the Saints' victory. It was not exclusively Lattimore against Beckham that Beckham and Giants coach Pat Shurmur spoke after the game about how much the Saints were playing in zone defense.
In fact, the Saints' change of zone was probably due to the problems Ken Crawley and P.J. Williams faced this season, but the latter two also played better on Sunday. Thus, after the match, Lattimore explained that he thought the defense was starting to recover his booty after bad performances early in the year.
"I can not say we have found it because it is only a match," he said. "We have to keep doing it week after week, and we'll see where we are."
Beckham finished the match with seven catches for 60 meters, a pedestrian game by his standards. Sterling Shepard gave the Giants 10 catches for 77 yards, but overall, the high school did a much better job of stopping big games, although that was partly due to Manning's poor performance.
No matter how things went on Sunday, Lattimore was happy to feel good, and he was happy to have another good match against an elite catcher.
"I feel like I'm a top corner, just like he's a better receiver, so we're going to fight," said Lattimore. "We are going to see who will come out on top." It's not like one of us was terrible and one was just right. excellent players, I feel good, so we have to go and fight and whoever will win, it's him who won. "
