The course of India from 142 in 2014 to 77 in 2018 is remarkable: Arun Jaitley

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley praised the fact that the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) has violated the code according to which countries are classified. India's travel of 142 in 2014 to 77 in 2018 marks a significant improvement, said Jaitley.

With uniform building regulations, India has risen from 184 in 2014 to 52 in 2018. This is the biggest jump in one, said Jaitley.

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Suresh Prabhu, said that today's ranking is an indication of the collective work between various ministries. He added that state and central governments are working together to make this important leap.

Reiterating the role of the government, said Jaitley, the ease of doing business is to optimize governance with a minimum of government staff.

The rise of India is seen as a tremendous boost for the Narendra Modi government. India gained 23 points in the World Bank's ease of doing business ranking in 77th place.

The biggest gains came in building permits, where India jumped 129 ranks to 52nd place thanks to the government's targeted efforts to remove barriers.

Commenting on the government's new initiative to monitor the ease of doing business at the district level, he said that this step would allow India to progress further at the micro level, thus affecting the overall situation.

India has improved its rankings in 6 out of 10 indicators and has come close to international best practices (border distance score) for 7 of the 10 indicators.
