Known for 37 years, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck remain one of Hollywood's favorites.
While Affleck continues to struggle to stay sober after entering rehab on Aug. 22, ET learned that Damon remains a key supporter in his recovery.
Despite the fact that both of them had fun together during the day, a source said that Damon had stopped drinking with his boyfriend a long time ago, to avoid allowing it.
"When Matt and Ben were young, they loved to party together and have fun, but as soon as Matt realized that Ben had addiction problems, he was sure he did not allow it," said a source to ET. with Ben because he does not want to support another downward spiral. Matt is a very loyal, stable and grounded friend who only wants success and happiness for Ben.
The source added that despite the fact that the two men have a close friendship over the years, Damon was taken aback by the seriousness of Affleck's current struggles.
"Matt and Ben have always been close friends in life, but when Ben relapsed, it was a surprise for Matt," said the source. "Matt had no idea of the seriousness of Ben's problem."
"Matt wants to be a good influence on Ben," the source added. "Ben's team, his closest friends and his family really support their friendship, they want them to spend more time, which may not support his sober lifestyle."
As for Affleck's ex-wife and the mother of her three children, Jennifer Garner, she said she was very supportive of Damon.
"Jen is so grateful that Matt gives him encouragement and positive advice," says the source. "Ben thinks Matt and Jen know that Ben needs his loved ones to overcome him … Ben really struggled with his sobriety With the support of Matt and his family, he will finally be able to stay sober and lead a healthy life.
AND met Affleck's brother, Casey, at the premiere of his new movie, Monday. The old man and the gun, in Toronto, Canada, where he reported on the winner of a 46-year-old Oscar.
"He's fine," says Casey, 43. "He is in rehab and he is recovering and seems to be doing well."
