The Chicago Cubs may have just put one of the best baseball players on the block. Third baseman Kris Bryant would be available in the trades, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.
Before fans of opposing teams begin to make ridiculous commercial offers, they must know that Bryant's news is accompanied by a fairly significant qualifier. The Cubs do not really want to tackle Bryant, 26, they simply have a policy that no player is untouchable, according to Theo Epstein.
"We have never worked with untouchables," he said. "It sends a bad message. Given what we are trying to accomplish, it would be virtually impossible to envisage the agreement that would make sense to make it evolve. I just do not believe in the untouchables. Why limit yourself? "
It's a very big qualifier. In fact, it's probably enough to make a story of it. The Cubs are not going to trade Bryant. They have no motivation to make the move. The only way to make this happen is if a team gives up all of its franchise to the Cubs. Do you really think the Los Angeles Angels will give up Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani for Bryant? Of course not.
Epstein's approach here is similar to that of an owner of your fantasy league who says that every player is available, but then asks you to drop half of your squad for their superstar. When you do not do that, they will turn to you and offer you Addison Russell – the guy they wanted to trade with from the beginning.
In other words, Bryant is not going anywhere. The Cubs may be afraid to sign Bryant in the long run, but he will remain under the control of the team until 2021. He is young, cheap compared to his production and a true superstar. With the Cubs in the middle of the conflict window, it makes no sense to separate from Bryant.
There is no reason to panic yet, Cubs fans. As Epstein notes, the team has always worked with a non-untouchable policy. The Cubs never exchanged stars like Bryant, Anthony Rizzo or Javier Baez, even if they were technically available. There is no reason to believe that they will start taking care of these guys now.
