SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Shaker Heights Teachers' Association is holding a candlelight vigil in memory of Aisha Fraser Mason, a teacher who was stabbed to death Saturday at her home.
Students, teachers, friends and community members are scheduled to meet on Monday, November 19 at 5:30 pm at Woodbury Elementary, in the 15400 block of South Woodland Road, in memory of Fraser Mason, whose husband, Lance Mason, was charged by police with the murder.
Fraser worked for 16 years at Shaker Heights Schools. He was recently a teacher in Woodbury in sixth grade.
Fraser was stabbed Saturday by Mason, a former courtroom judge in Cuyahoga County, according to sources.
Mason, who spent nine months in jail for beating Fraser in front of their children, was arrested on Saturday for murder, police said.
Shaker Heights police reacted at about 9:30 am on Saturday at Fraser's home located in the 17600 block of boulevard Chagrin for a spousal dispute. Mason attempted to flee the scene aboard a black Audi SUV, but struck a police SUV from Shaker Heights, thus injuring the policeman and himself, police said.
Mason and the officer were taken to hospital on Saturday.
After Mr. Mason was released from prison in June 2016 after assaulting his wife in 2014, he was struck off and banned from reinstating the position of judge. He was ordered to pay Fraser a $ 150,000 judgment in a civil case for damages after the attack.
Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson hired Mason at the end of August 2017 as Director of Minority Business Development for the city. Jackson dismissed Mason on Saturday on the basis of crime charges arising from the Shaker Heights incident.
"I send my deepest condolences to Ms. Aisha Fraser's family, especially to her children," Jackson said in a statement.
Shaker Heights' superintendent Stephen Wilkins said in a statement that Fraser was a dedicated mother and committed teacher.
"It has touched so many lives of our children and we will miss them tremendously," said Wilkins statement. "His loss is unexpected and the impact of this news on our entire school community is unimaginable and profound."
The Shaker Heights Teachers' Association released a statement Saturday. "Aisha illustrated the best of Shaker Heights teachers; intelligent, incredibly attentive to his students and colleagues, active in his profession and in our association. She is loved by many. "
The teachers' association has created an account on gofundme.com with proceeds donated to Fraser's 11 and 8 year old girls.
Audrey, the Masons' 11-year-old daughter, has Down syndrome and underwent open-heart surgery at the age of 8 months to repair a hole in her heart. According to the Plain Dealer archives, the couple opened the Audrey's Chocolate store in 2012 to pay tribute to her daughter, help provide additional income for Audrey's medical expenses and eventually employ people with Down syndrome.
