A 22-year-old Florida man who was helping another motorist on Thursday night was killed after being hit by a car that was then driven by the driver, the authorities said.

Dhimitri Andoni, 22, of Clearwater, Florida, was driving on Interstate 275 when he noticed another motorist in need of assistance, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a press release.

"Shortly after the stop, the motorist was able to leave the premises and Andoni returned to his vehicle," the statement said. "Coming back to his vehicle on the right side of the car and by the roadside, Andoni was hit by a passing vehicle."

The transit vehicle was reportedly driven by the suspect, Dana Thomas Byrd, 30, from St. Petersburg, the authorities said.

"Byrd stopped along the shoulder, approached Andoni and found out that he had died," the statement said. "Byrd then entered Andoni's vehicle and fled the scene of the accident."

Authorities found the suspect at his home and arrested him for a major car theft and left the scene of an accident involving death, according to the press release.
