Peter Mirijanian, a spokesman for Ivanka Trump's lawyer, Father Lowell, said something similar in a statement following the Post's post. (Again, the fat is mine.)
"When transitioning to government, until the White House provides her with the same advice that she had beforeMs. Trump sometimes used her private account, almost always for logistical and family planning purposes, "said Mirijanian.
How. Is. This. Possible.
How could Ivanka Trump have not known – even before the White House provided her "advice" – that the use of a private messaging account to carry out official activities was a no-no ?
That you buy this explanation in Clinton is actually a problem. The problem is this: it's literally impossible to believe after all that happened during the 2016 campaign about Clinton's use of a private email to handle business from the government, that Ivanka Trump was simply unaware that what she was doing was forbidden. It's just not possible.
The Ivanka team was quick to find that both situations were not – and are not – exactly the same. Once again, Mirijanian:
"To remedy the misinformation conveyed by Mrs Trump's personal e-mail, she did not create a private server in her house or office, no classified information was transmitted, the account was not used. has never been transferred or stored at Trump Organization, no e-mail has been removed, and e-mails have been kept in the official account in accordance with the laws and rules for the retention of documents. "
OK Clinton has removed much of the emails that she sent from her private account after someone who worked for her created a large area of all the emails that she had sent and determined that they were entirely personal and could therefore be deleted without sharing them with the investigators. (About 50% of the emails on Clinton's private server were removed, while 44% were given to investigators.)
And of course, there are – at least on the surface – specific differences between what Clinton did and what Ivanka did. But dude, by and large, is pretty much the same.
Mirijanian's statement misses the point. The credulity is far beyond the willingness to think that Ivanka simply ignored that what she was doing using her private email account was totally topical. No living being – and certainly not a senior government official who happens to be the eldest daughter of the US president – could have lived the 2016 campaign without understanding this basic equation: Private emails for government business = bad.
It remains to be seen whether what Ivanka Trump has done merits an official inquiry – although I strongly suspect the Democratic Chamber to look closely at the situation in January. But what is quite clear in all this is that Ivanka absolutely had to know better.
