HAMPTON, NH – A deadly outbreak of legionellosis in Hampton Beach appears to be over, health officials in New Hampshire said Thursday. The deceased was identified as an elderly person. The outbreak was caused by spa spas at the Sands Resort and the Harris Sea Ranch Motel. At least nine of those infected have contracted the disease at The Sands, officials said. Both spas were closed for cleaning.
Legionnaires' disease is a life-threatening respiratory infection that can be found, for example, in contaminated showers, hot tubs, faucets, cooling towers, foggers and fountains. Humans contract the disease by breathing the bacteria that cause them. Drinking contaminated water will not transmit the disease and the disease can not be transmitted from person to person. The disease can be fatal for young people, the elderly and people with existing medical problems.
"We believe that the most likely sources of exposure have been eliminated or are being eliminated by the rehabilitation of the water system," said the Department of Health and Human Resources. New Hampshire social services in a statement. "DHHS believes that the current global health risk for the community is low."
The outbreak was discovered at the end of August and no new cases have been reported this week.
