At least 20 people were injured when a cluttered escalator collapsed in a Rome train station.

Images of the incident on a cell phone show dozens of people rushing down and rushing to get away. The cause was not immediately known.

Italian media said the incident involved visiting fans of the Russian CSKA Moscow football team, which faced Italy's Roma team in a Champions League clash earlier in the day.

Witnesses said that football fans had sung and jumped before the escalator gave way and images shared on social networks showed people crammed to the base.

We see people on the parallel escalator who are trying to catch those who are on the machine down and put them safe.

The investigators closed the metropolitan station of Piazza Repubblica, near the main station of Termini. Firefighters said seven were in serious condition.

Images posted on social networks by Italian firefighters show twisted metal from a broken escalator.

"The scene we found was people piled up at the bottom of the escalator," said Rome Fire Chief Giampietro Boscaino.

"People on top of each other are looking for help.

"They had various injuries caused by the twisted escalator, so serious injury."
