Shared images on social media showed a solid staircase down an escalator at an alarming speed, causing the fall of a bunch of people.

According to the Italian news agency ANSA, the most serious injury was inflicted on a young man whose foot was so mutilated that he was at risk of being amputated. Six others are in serious condition.

The footage from the suite showed the steps of the escalator crumpled down, leaving shredded metal plates and exposed to a place where the pile of people was bumping into each other.

At the time, hundreds of football fans attended a Champions League match between Italian and Russian teams competing in the group stages.

Witnesses reported conflicting information about travelers singing and dancing or jumping on the escalator, although some told the Italian media that there were no jumps.

The Roman authorities have opened an investigation into the accident. The BBC said local transport authorities, Atac, said monthly checks were being carried out on transport infrastructure, including escalators.
