A man from Lake Grove who has found human remains in his basement hopes they will come up with answers about his missing father.
For nearly six decades, the unpretentious home on Olive Street has kept a secret. And now, Michael Carroll may have unveiled the mystery of what happened to his father, George.
"I have a basement in ruins, but I'm really happy to have found what we found," he says.
On Tuesday night, Carroll's sons discovered skeletal remains in the basement. The family believes that the remains may be from George Carroll, who died in 1961 after serving in Korea. Michael recounts that the story his mother told about his father's disappearance still bothered him. He therefore sought and engaged researchers, psychics and paranormal investigators.
But it was a company with a ground penetrating radar that indicated that something could be under the concrete floor of the basement. After years of searching and digging, about 5 feet deep, they found bones and called the Suffolk police, who are currently investigating.
As to whether George's wife, Dorothy Carroll, knew anything, the kids would not speculate. But they say that their mother died in 1998.
"I think my mother was trying to protect us as young children," says brother Steven Carroll.
If the results of the DNA tests on the remains indicate that it is about George Carroll, the family says that it will close them some doors and allow them to finally bury the veteran. of the Korean War with honors.
The family says it could take a few weeks to recover the results of the DNA.
