Three men were killed after the explosion of a car Saturday night in Allentown, Pennsylvania, causing the evacuation of nearby residents, authorities said.
Officials were investigating the causes of the blast and interviewing witnesses, but they determined Sunday that there was no threat to the community, said Tony Alsleben, acting chief of the department's Allentown police, at a press conference.
"Our investigation leads us to believe that it was an isolated incident," he said.
Scott M. Grim, coroner of Lehigh County, said three men had been killed in the explosion, which was reported around 9:30 pm. a few blocks from downtown. Officials are working to confirm their identities and autopsies are scheduled for Monday, he added.
James B. Martin, Lehigh County District Attorney, said officials knew that a "criminal incident" had occurred.
"We are convinced that the author was probably killed during the incident," he said. Officials have published few other details, citing the ongoing investigation.
The explosion took place on the edge of the old historic district of Allentown, renowned for the diversity of its architectural houses, and near the commercial and cultural center of the city, dedicated to restaurants and shops.
Mrs. Connelly said that she had run towards the noise, where she had seen the wreckage of a burning car and burning debris strewing the street.
"I ran away when I saw parts of my body and I could not believe it was real," said Mrs. Connelly, sobbing. "It's real life and I'm shaking and panicking as I run. I still can not believe it.
Authorities said the surrounding blocks would remain closed throughout the investigation. The Red Cross opened a shelter in a school for residents who could not return home.
