A fatal fall of an Israeli teenager in Yosemite National Park, allegedly taking place Wednesday, took place at the top of the Nevada Fall, authorities said Thursday.

Tomer Frankfurter, 18, of Jerusalem, fell from the cliff beside the 594-foot waterfall on the Merced River, according to the Mariposa County Coroner's Office.

Park officials investigate what led to the fatal fall, but a Times of Israel article quotes a TV interview with the victim's mother, stating that Frankfurter fell off a cliff while attempting to photograph himself .

Nevada Fall is one of the few well-known waterfalls in Yosemite National Park. The waterfall is 5 km from the Yosemite Valley and includes a steep climb on the Mist Trail – a collection of massive granite steps that extend beyond the Vernal Falls, which often attracts hikers.

The press organization said that Frankfurter's mother, who had not been identified, confirmed the death with the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She said her son was on a two-month trip to the United States before joining the Israeli army.

Scott Gediman, spokesperson for Yosemite National Park, said Thursday that the death was under investigation and no further information was available.

Andrea Stewart, Deputy Coroner for Mariposa County, stated that a medical examiner had not yet examined Frankfurter's body. The Times of Israel reported that his body would be returned to Israel for burial.

It is not uncommon for granite cliffs and Yosemite rocks to fly away and for signs to be placed in observation areas atop many of the park's waterfalls.

Frankfurter's death is the third of the park this summer.

In June, two mountaineers lost their lives in El Capitan, in the Yosemite Valley, while using a climbing technique called simul climbing.
