The lawyer of a New Jersey man whose brother and family were found murdered earlier this week after the suspicious fire of their home, and only hours after he'd have burned his own house, expecting his client to be exonerated.

Paul Caneiro, 51, is accused of burning his home in Ocean Township with his wife and two daughters inside. They were found safe and sound.

Caneiro's lawyer, Robert Honecker, said his client's family could testify on his behalf, reported Asbury Park Press.

"His family fully supports him. (…) We are confident that my client will be exonerated once the case is resolved," said Honecker, former senior prosecutor of the Monmouth County District Attorney's Office.

However, investigators are also studying the deaths of Caneiro's father, Keith, 50, his wife Jennifer, 45, and their children Jesse, 11, and Sophia, 8. Keith Caneiro was found dead as a result of gunshot wounds on Tuesday in the courtyard of his home in the town of Colts Neck. His wife and children were found dead in the house of a million and a half dollars.

Authorities said the four people were killed before the fire.

"We think this family has been targeted in one way or another," said Monmouth County District Attorney Christopher Gramiccioni earlier this week, adding that he could neither confirm or deny that Paul Caniero was a suspect in these murders.

Paul Caneiro was not charged but he remained in Monmouth County Jail, reported NJ.com.

"The accusation does not seem to make sense, as there seems to be very little evidence of a reason for doing so," Honecker said. "The evidence I've seen does not suggest any reason for the arson of his home."

"The charge seems to be meaningless as there seems to be very little evidence of a reason to do so.The evidence that I have seen suggests no reason to do the same." Arson of his house. "

A GoFundMe page was created by a friend of one of Paul Caneiro's daughters to raise funds for the family following the fire at their home and the murder of their loved ones.

Paul Caneiro faces up to 10 years in prison. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday when Honecker should seek his client's release.

"The only charges currently pending in the arson of his own residence," said Honecker. "No further charges are brought against him, and any connection with what happened at Colts Neck is pure speculation."

He said that Elder Caneiro loved his youngest brother and would never have hurt him.

"They were the best friends in the world, his brother was his best man at his wedding and they talked to each other every day," he added.
