The California Department of Public Health confirmed July 17 the first whooping darling of the condition in an infant since 2016.
About 50 to 200 infants in California are hospitalized each year due to whooping cough. In 2006, two babies died of the disease.
"Any infant death due to whooping cough is preventable through maternal vaccination," said James Watt, MD, chief of the Division of Communicable Disease Control CNN .
For confidentiality reasons, the Division of Communicable Disease Control does not publish case details, infant identity, or information on the mother's immunization status.
The CDC recommends that mothers receive pertussis vaccine in the third trimester.
