MOOSIC, Pennsylvania – Elders in Lackawanna County queued for flu shots on Friday. Even though it may seem like summer, doctors say it's time to think about the flu season.
The Lackawanna County Health Fair is now a seven-year tradition. Dozens of providers connect elderly people to different services.
There was a station that was particularly busy. Phyllis and Joseph Fayocavitz were among the dozens of people who benefited from free flu shots
"We were not doing anything today, so we thought it might just as well go and see what it was like, then they got the flu shot, so we said we were going to get vaccinated, "Phyllis Fayocavitz said. "Usually we do not get it so early, but we were there and they did it."
The Senior Health Fair takes place at PNC Field, home of the RailRiders – a reminder of the baseball season and the little summer we have left, not necessarily the flu season and the coming winter, but the professionals of the health time to get vaccinated against the flu.
Karen Dekle of the Lackawanna County Visiting Nurses Association says she is starting to get the flu shot in September. The Centers for Disease Control recommend that you get one before the end of October.
Seniors are particularly at risk.
"When they get sick, they get sicker, and once they're sick, they have more difficulty recovering, and many times they never come back 100%, so if you can prevent a flu or Illness like that, it's a lot better than fighting this disease, "said Dekle.
Prevention was the motivation for many like Katherine Norton of Moosic.
"My sister told me that they were giving flu shots last year and we missed it, so I wanted to come here this year and get mine," he said. Norton.
Lackawanna County officials say a few hundred seniors visit the health fair each year.
