The winner of the Miss Universe crown in 1995 died after a long illness.

KTRK-TV quotes a statement from the Chelsi Smith family that the contest winner died Saturday at the age of 45. Jarrod Klawinsky, a spokesman for Smith, said the Houston Chronicle Smith had been diagnosed with liver cancer in the spring of 2017.

Smith began her beauty queen career in 1994 with the crown of Miss Galveston County. The following year, she won the crown of Miss Texas USA and Miss USA. The family's statement says Smith is the only biracial woman to win all three crowns. The Chronicle reports that Smith was also the only Texan to become Miss Universe.

The family says that a public memorial service is scheduled for October in Houston.
