A former Dayton journalist has resigned from a California TV channel after his Facebook post to Justice Brett Kavanaugh, recently confirmed in the US Supreme Court.

Kris Long, a Channel 2 presenter in the late 1970s and early 1980s, left CBS Local 2 after it was posted on Facebook last month, according to several media reports.

Long's position defended Kavanaugh against a charge that the Supreme Court petitioner sexually assaulted Christine Blasey Ford, an acquaintance while in high school.

Since September 17, he had been away since his post triggered a debate on the social media platform about Kavanaugh's confirmation, assault complaint and journalistic ethics, according to Palm Springs Desert Sun.

Kavanaugh was confirmed by the US Senate by a vote of 50 to 48 on Saturday and was later sworn in.

In a written statement on October 5, Jerry Upham, general manager of the Gulf California Broadcast Company, wrote that Palm Springs subsidiary CBS had accepted Long's resignation "immediately," according to the Desert Sun.

Upham added, "Kris Long is an integral part of this company's news agency and we want to thank him for his many years of service." Writes Upham.

Long also commented in the same written statement, according to the Desert Sun.

"I want to thank those who have offered their support and to excuse me again for all that I have been offending," said Long. "I hope to return to the news business in the future."
