Former Zimbabwean President Mugabe, 94, is unable to walk because of health problems, said President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mr Mugabe is in Singapore for the treatment of an undeclared disease for two months, he added.

The former president also made several medical trips towards the end of his term.

Mr. Mnangagwa became head of state a year ago after the ouster of Mr. Mugabe following the intervention of the army.

Until then, Mugabe was the only president Zimbabwe has known, in power for 37 years.

He led the movement for the independence of Zimbabwe from the domination of the white minority.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa told his supporters that his predecessor would be back in the country next week.

President Mnangagwa was addressing a rally in his predecessor's area when he talked about the health of the former leader.

"He is now old.Of course, he is now unable to walk but whatever he will ask, we will provide him," said the AFP news agency.

When Mugabe was in power, officials said he was being treated for eye problems, denying rumors that he had cancer.

Despite his inability to walk, Mr. Mnangagwa said the former leader felt better and would be back in the country next week.

"We take care of him, he is the founding father of the Zimbabwe nation, he is our founding father of free Zimbabwe," the president added.

The government pays Mr Mugabe's salary.

After succeeding him last year, Mr. Mnangagwa won the controversial presidential election in July.
