Former state senator Brian Joyce, who was accused of accepting bribes and bribes at his trial, was found dead in his home in Westport yesterday afternoon, said officials.
Gregg Miliote, a spokesman for the Bristol District Attorney's Office, said Joyce had been found by his wife and no criminal act was suspected.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has taken custody of the body and an autopsy will be performed in the coming days. The investigation is active and ongoing, said Miliote.
Officials reported that Joyce was involved in a car accident Wednesday in Westport, but that was not related to his death.
Joyce, a Milton Democrat who served for nine terms, was awaiting trial for federal corruption charges. Last year, he was arrested by federal authorities on 113 charges including cases of racketeering, extortion, computer fraud and money laundering.
The December 2014 indictment, which was 104 pages long, included additional charges, including postal fraud, embezzlement and conspiracy to hinder and impede IRS functions. He pleaded not guilty to all charges, was released on bail of $ 250,000 and was forced to surrender his passport.
Joyce reportedly used his Senate office to take bribes and bribes. Rebates ranged from free coffee books to a car. In all, the federal government estimated it totaled about $ 1 million.
Joyce, 56, was first elected to the Senate in 1998 and announced in 2016, while he was under federal investigation on corruption charges, that he would not run for reelection .

Joyce graduated from Boston College and the Faculty of Law at Suffolk University. He and his wife, Mary, had five children.
