Two male penguins have welcomed a chick, announced Friday an Australian aquarium.
The parents Sphen and Magic met their adoptive baby on October 19 and managed to feed and care for the little bird, which is now called Sphengic, according to Sydney Sea Life Aquarium.
"Baby Sphengic has already stolen our hearts! We love to watch the proud parents loving and take turns taking care of their baby, "said Tish Hannan, supervisor of the penguin department at the aquarium, in a declaration.
Before the aquarium gave an egg to the penguins of the same sex of the sub-Antarctic, they observed them with a dummy egg and affirmed that the parents were "absolute natural beings".
The aquarium said the first 20 days of the chick's life were the most vulnerable and that, until now, new parents are actually co-donors and feed their chicks. The chick will stay close to his parents for the first five to six weeks of life, feeding up to 10 times a day.
Staff said the chick would become an ambassador for the aquarium, helping to educate the public about the species.
Earlier this year, a couple of homosexual penguins in Denmark "kidnapped" a chick from his parents and tried to raise him as if it was theirs. Zookeepers, who returned the chick to his biological parents, found how much the same – sex couple fed him well and then decided to give them an egg from a mother who could not stand up. to occupy it.
