It's time for the New York Giants to take a new direction with the quarterback.
Eli Manning, the 37-year-old flagman who joined Big Blue since taking office in 2004, is no longer doing his job. After a 20-13 loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday, Manning is now 1-7 as a starter this season and 4-19 since the start of the 2017 season. With a bye in Week 9, the Giants now have a little more time to prepare for their next game at the quarterback.
Asked about a possible exchange after defeat on Sunday, the Giants head coach said: Pat Shurmur refused to show his hand.
"I do not want to go," Shurmur said.
In fact, if the Giants hire anyone other than Manning at the quarterback when they return to play on the road against the San Francisco 49ers in the 10th week, this season will reflect the last season. The Giants faced the 49ers in San Francisco the same week of last season and the former head coach Ben McAdoo made the controversial decision to put Eli on the bench.
If Shurmur makes the same decision at the quarterback, there will be a similar controversy. And to survive the storm that will come his way, he must learn from the mistakes of his predecessor.
McAdoo's biggest mistake (aside from his haircut) was his decision to launch the former New York Jets bust Geno Smithespecially on Manning. He could have given then the rookie Davis Webb a chance to see what he could do. Instead, Webb went on the bench and was eliminated without ever playing a regular season with the team that drafted him in the third round.
Webb turned out to be a complete waste of the second day's choice, and Shurmur can no longer afford to make such a mistake. Like Smith, no Giants fan wants to see which 30-year-old fellow Alex Tanney (zero starts since 2012) looks like the entrance. They want to see the rookie – and this year's pick of the fourth round Kyle Lauletta.
Lauletta will not make a miraculous turnaround or immediately claim to be the next quarterback of the franchise in New York, but giving her the chance to start could change the way the Giants approach the next season. General Manager Dave Gettleman has already encouraged a rebuild with the exchange of two defensive starters for future choices. He and the rest of the New York staff department will want to know what they have at the most important position inside the free agency and project.
Although Manning insists that he will not give up his no-trade clause, there is a good chance that he and the Giants will separate after this season. By cutting it off, the team will save $ 17 million from the salary cap. Gettleman is already taking steps to create space for hoods, and it's hard to see how an older quarter with declining skills will fit into his plan for the future.
Manning may be playing well elsewhere, but it is becoming increasingly clear that he is no longer able to win with the Giants.
