The government has requested funding commitments for cancer treatment

The Irish Cancer Society called on the government to ensure that funding commitments for treatment and infrastructure improvements are fully respected.

The appeal was launched at the annual conference of survivors of the organization in Galway.

CEO of Averil Power said improvements to services in recent years have helped improve results for cancer patients.

But she added that Ireland was still lagging behind other countries in the availability of certain drugs and that additional measures were needed to meet the demand for treatment.

Ms Power said she hoped all the commitments made in the national development plan, as well as other investment commitments, would be included in the next budget.

Today's conference saw more than 300 people confronting cancer data collection to discuss all aspects of treating and fighting the disease.

It is estimated that around 165,000 people live with or without cancer in Ireland now.

Their experiences during and after treatment are at the heart of the theme of the event: "Living Well with Cancer".

Delegates heard about the supports available during medical care and focus particularly on the measures that can be taken to help people who are fully living after the end of treatment.

Fatigue management, the treatment of relationship problems and the importance of mental and physical well-being are among the topics covered.
