Kansas Governor Jeff Colyer calls for the resignation of a county commissioner who commented on his membership in "the race of masters".
Leavenworth County Commissioner, Louis Klemp, made the remarks at a meeting held Tuesday by a Commissioner during a discussion with Triveece Penelton, a black urban planner, who was discussing a proposed project. development plan.
"The inappropriate words of Leavenworth County Commissioner Louis Klemp are unacceptable and do not reflect the values of the county he represents," Kansas governor Jeff Colyer said in a statement released on Saturday. "As such, I am asking him to resign as county commissioner."
The city of Leavenworth on Thursday released a statement on Facebook that the city government has "no power to dismiss Mr. Klemp," but the "City Commission believes that it is in the best interest of the Leavenworth community that Mr. Klemp apologizes and resigns immediately. "
But Klemp, who did not immediately respond to NBC News's requests for comment on the case, told KSHB-TV, an affiliate of NBC Kansas City, that his comment was a joke.
Similarly, Leavenworth County administrator reacted Friday to Klemp's remarks, saying that he "will not attempt to defend Commissioner Klemp", but that these comments "do not refer to the Nazis".
"On several occasions over the past year, Mr. Klemp said that people with a hole in the front teeth are members of the master race," said Loughry's administrator. "At the meeting on Tuesday, he stated that he and the lady who appeared on the board of directors were members of the main race because of the gap in their teeth."
Loughry said that although it was not in his power to take action against Klemp, he believed that the use of "master race" was "misguided".
"I am deeply sorry that a comment misinterpreted by a member of our elected governing body has caused so much grief, sorrow and hatred," Loughry said.
