Since they've scored 30 total points against the Jaguars and Lions, the Patriots have scored 38, 38, 43, 38, 25 and 31. Even by reducing the 21 points that they scored in defense and in the special teams, that kind of opening.
Numerous adjustments and deployments of staff have led to this – from the focus on the game to the emergence of Sony Michel on the return of Julian Edelman to the addition of Josh Gordon to the inability of the defenders to focus on Rob Gronkowski to lightened performances of the offensive line and James White.
We could go on, but you are watching the games. You also know what is Tom Brady's answer to the question of whether the offense is close to his potential.
"Certainly not," he said on Friday. "I think we need more time together. We must be quite experienced in these games. We had a long series of practices, but again, many people came in and out. So, when everyone is together, it's fun to watch us go see us train and see the different mismatches we can get and the different types that play. I think it's really fun. I think that offensive football consists of different types playing different roles.
"So, you have explosive games in the racing game that really helped us this year at different times with Sony [Michel], James [White] made a couple. Different types make explosive passes – Hoges [Chris Hogan]Gronk [Rob Gronkowski], Josh [Gordon]Phillip [Dorsett] – but the more we have, the more difficult it is to defend.
"They can not focus on one person. If everybody plays, he has to play an honest defense and if they do, we have to take advantage of it. That's why we try to build, week after week, what we do. As I said, I do not think we are a finished product. We will continue to work and I think part of this activity is going out every day, pedaling in the metal and trying to do our best.
In attack, the Patriots are always at the confrontation. They are as far from the "we do what we do" group as any other team. Find where the defense is light. Hit it.
That's what they will try to do Sunday in Tennessee against a defense of the Titans that has proven itself.
"They have a lot of hybrid guys, similar to last week," said Brady about the Titans. "They sort of opposed us with different matches and this week I'm sure it will be the same. I think there are certain things in the game that are always unpredictable and I think that with Dean [Pees] and Mike [Vrabel], they will be sure to have different looks for us and we have different looks for them. This is part of the game of chess that enters these games. It's a good defense. I'm cool with everything we need to do to move the ball to the field and score points. Whether we bring together or scatter everyone, we will simply see how the game will unfold. "
The score of the Patriots in the first half this season shows how they were able to find the clashes of the week before the match and then hit them on their first outings.
The second quarters were particularly explosive as they scored 82 points in the second quarter in six games.
Sometimes the match is quickly revealed. Last week, the Patriots went into high gear and gave the ball to James White. The Packers were caught off guard.
Doing this on the road against a defense coordinated by the former Patriots coach, Dean Pees – who will not defend the guys who do not get quickly aligned – is going to be more difficult.
That's why the return of Sony Michel (who is dubious but made the trip to Nashville) would be a boon to the Patriots. Even though the Titans have become very difficult to manage (just over 3 YPCs compared to the last four), being able to alternate tempo and staff and have a serious threat like Michael means that Tennessee will have to realize .
With a not so powerful attack, the defense built by Mike Vrabel and General Manager Jon Robinson is in the mold of what the Patriots have sworn.
Basically healthy. Strong Super attack situationally. Stopping points is more important than stopping yards and you are not playing if the odds are not in your favor.
"They are good in the red zone, they are good in third place, they do not give up the big games, they do not give up points," said Bill Belichick. "They are very good basically, like Mike [Vrabel] was as a player and Dean [Pees] I know is a strong fundamental coach. They have a good race force, they have good attacks. Their corners attack well. Malcolm [Butler], Logan [Ryan], [Adoree’] Jackson – these guys are all as good as, if not better than most corners of the league as a group. They limit the yards after capture. They are just healthy and disciplined and consistent. "
Brady and the Patriots will not look at each other when they line up on Sunday. But they will watch a version of themselves. It may take a bit of time to tinkle the mirror mirror, but it will happen.
The choice: Patriots 23, Titans 10
