France has opened an investigation into the disappearance of Meng Hongwei, Chinese official of the international police agency Interpol.

His family has not heard from him since he left Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France, for a trip back to China last week, police sources said.

"It has not disappeared in France," AFP told a source close to the French investigation.

Mr. Meng is a senior official of the Communist Party in China.

He was elected President of Interpol two years ago.

The investigation was opened after Mr. Meng's wife went to the police to report the disappearance of her husband.

Prior to joining Interpol, Meng Hongwei was Deputy Minister of Public Security in China.
