The high-end Internet in Tesla cars ceases to be free on July 1

Existing owners will continue to enjoy Tesla's free on-board internet, but those who buy a new Tesla from July 1 will have to pay if they want anything other than basic connectivity features.

The cost of owning a Tesla electric vehicle should increase from July 1 if you want full Internet access while traveling. That's because Tesla is putting an end to its free Internet car serial offer on all new vehicles.

If you already own a Tesla, do not worry, your Internet service will not change and will not incur new fees. However, starting next month, the new owners of Tesla will have the choice. Select a free standard connectivity bundle or pay for a set of premium connectivity.

As reported by HotHardware, the Standard Package includes cellular navigation, traffic-based routing, and OTA (Over The Air) updates for your vehicle. It is important to note that only security-related OTA updates will occur on cell phones. Other updates will require a WiFi connection.

The Premium Package is the equivalent of what existing Tesla owners already enjoy for free. It includes live traffic visualizations, satellite maps and all OTA updates managed via the cellular connection. Web browsing and music streaming are also available.

The cost of the Premium Package has not yet been revealed, but we can expect it to be around $ 100 a year. This is not bad considering the additional features that it offers, but at the same time frustrating for new owners who know others enjoy the same service for free. If you buy a Model S or a Model X, expect that one year of the Premium package will be launched for free.
