Authorities continue to investigate a fatal rail collision that killed two people Saturday night in Wareham.
The victims were a 33-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man, both from Wareham, announced the Plymouth District Attorney's Office.
According to the investigators, the conductor tried to stop the train using the emergency braking system, but this was not enough to stop the fatal collision. Both were determined to be dead on the scene, said DA's office Their names were withheld from Sunday.
The incident occurred at approximately 1929 at 52.5 while 355 passengers on the train took part in a scenic, holiday-themed boardwalk that began at Buzzards Bay.
According to the authorities, none of the passengers were injured.
Kaylene Jablecki, director of passenger operations at the Cape Cod Central Railroad, told NBC 10 that the trip consisted of a dress rehearsal of a train to the Christmas Town that is expected to open later in the season.
On board were local firefighters and their children, said Jablecki, who was collecting donations for "Homeless for the Holidays".
The attraction is that the train takes the children to the North Pole to see Santa Claus. Unfortunately, he hit and killed two people before he could do it.
"Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, it's a very difficult time for all of us," said Jablecki.
She said the staff kept the Christmas songs and the teenagers dressed as elves kept dancing to deter children from what was going on outside.
"We told the kids that the train was running out of magic and that Santa would use his magic to visit them at Christmas," said Jablecki.
On board, Jablecki said the crew was receiving innumerable emails from firefighters and police congratulating the staff for keeping the children unconscious.
"We are trying to go beyond that, we are all very angry," Jablecki told NBC 10.
The train to Christmas Town is scheduled to continue the day after Thanksgiving.
Authorities say that the fatal accident is still under investigation.
