A man in North Carolina who said he had taken too much cold medicine may have led to his wife being stabbed to death and pleaded guilty in court on Friday.

Matthew Phelps pleaded guilty to first degree murder for the death of his wife, Lauren Hugelmaier Phelps, aged 29, after an autopsy revealed that he had stabbed her 123 times.

Phelps, 29, will serve life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, reported WTVD-TV, ABC Durham.

His wife died on September 1, 2017 at the Raleigh House, the couple.

"I have blood on me and there is a bloody knife on the bed and I think I did," said Matthew Phelps at the 911 call. "I can not go there believe.

In this 911 call, Matthew Phelps said, "I took Coricidin for coughs and colds," explaining that "very often, I can not sleep at night."

His body was found in a fetal position in the couple's room.

The investigators said they learned on social media that they "suspected Matthew Phelps to be fascinated by a serial killer character from the movie" American Psycho "and look like him.
