An Iowa school district opened an investigation about a teacher who was wearing a blackface at a Halloween party, in another case of someone exposed for using the racist practice for Halloween.
The investigation comes as part of a renewed and widespread public discussion on Blackface after "Today" host Megyn Kelly defended its use for Halloween this week.
The Davenport School District is investigating teacher Megan Luloff of Walcott Elementary and Middle School who allegedly wore a black head at a public Halloween party on Friday night.
Luloff, who is white and disguised as Lafawnduh, a character from the movie "Napoleon Dynamite," reported the Quad-City Times. The character is played by actress Shondrella Avery, who is black.
A spokeswoman for the Davenport School District confirmed that the district had been informed of the incident on Monday and that a survey was being conducted by human resources.
The district did not confirm whether the teacher returned to school and referred HuffPost to comments by the Superintendent of The Quad-City Times newspaper.
"The wearing of the blackface is never appropriate under any circumstances by anyone," said Superintendent Art Tate in an email to The Times. "The issue is under study by the district."
The State Department of Iowa asked the district a few months ago to review an audit of its special education services and color students, the Times reported.
The audit revealed that a disproportionate number of students of color had been identified for special education services and had been disproportionately disciplined.
"It is very disconcerting to see that the black-faced woman is a teacher who is supposed to create a safe and equitable classroom environment for all children," Betty C. Andrews, Chair of the NAACP Branches Conference, told The Quad. Iowa-Nebraska Time of the city.
