Throwing something from the ISS is quite difficult.
European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst has discovered a floppy disk collection aboard the ISS.
The floppy disk was hidden in one of the lockers, which seems to have not been searched for a few years, writes the online edition of Chronicle.info with a reference to nv.ua.
On November 20th, the International Space Station celebrated its 20th anniversary. Perhaps, in this regard, Alexander Gerst and decided to step on the old cabinets.
"I found a locker on @Space_Station, which is probably not open for a long time," wrote an astronaut.
Most of the discs bear the logo of NASA and apparently contain service information. Two of them, signed by Shep and Sergei, probably belonged to astronaut William Shepherd and Sergei Krikalev, who was part of the first crew in 2000.
Twitter users noticed that the Norton Utilities for Windows 95/98, version 4.0, were burned to another floppy disk. They were used after the appearance of Windows.
Throwing something out of the ISS is quite difficult – cargo-loading freighters, whose capacity is limited. Therefore, the ISS still has a lot of techniques from past generations. ISS control systems go through laptops. On the ISS, there are about 80 people, most Lenovo T61P, but some of the older Lenovo Thinkpad A31p Pentium 4 processors.
The first laptops of the ISS, which were probably used, Krikalev and Shepard, were an IBM ThinkPad 760XD specially modified for use in the space. These computers were an external drive for a three-inch floppy disk.
