LeBron James was lucky enough to win his first Lakers uniform victory – with the ball in his hands, L.A. trailing by one and the last seconds sinking. But that did not have to be. Left wing LeBron's half-jumper hit right, and the Spurs managed to win with a wild victory of 143-142, allowing the Lakers to lead to 0-3.
"I found myself in my place, I had the shot I wanted, it just did not go down," James told reporters afterwards.
As for LeBron, he has a clean and neat look. Over the years, LeBron has had the choice between a second and a second waning – resize his defender and find his way back to the end of time. It's a comfortable and rhythmic shot for him. He succeeds almost exactly this shot, though a bit deeper, to repel the Warriors in his Heat era.
It's clear that LeBron can do any ground shot, and since he's been successful with this particular approach in the last few seconds, it's easy to understand why LeBron is felt comfortable to go back. At the same time, LeBron told reporters after the match how much the officials called fouls early in the season. "With the new rules," he says, "you can not literally touch anyone."
So here you have a human freight train to LeBron, who seems to think that he had an angle of view on his defender before retiring, and you also have officials screaming fouls to the right and to the left. It seems as if going to the basket, when one is only down, would be a bet more calculated than to be satisfied with a horseman in withdrawal. It's hard to imagine LeBron not getting a call if he had gone all the way. Could it be that LeBron does not feel comfortable shooting free throws with the game at stake? It looks crazy Skip-Bayless, I know, but look at this statistic:
In simple terms, LeBron was a terrific free-throw shooter in these tight overtime situations and missed two important ones under the Spurs regulation. Just something to chew on.
All that being said, the Lakers would not even have been in overtime without LeBron's exploits. After L.A came back from eighth with a little over a minute, LeBron tried to seduce this beautiful woman:
But finally, it's Patty Mills who dropped the winner of OT that LeBron could not answer.
LeBron finished with – ho-hum – 32 points, 14 assists and eight rebounds. Kyle Kuzma had a monster night with 37 points and eight rebounds, and Josh Hart was once again fantastic with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The 142 points were most marked by a LeBron team, and yet that was not enough. For the first time since 2004, LeBron James started on a score of 0-3. The season is young, but in the West, as my man, Yogi Berra liked to say, it is early. The Lakers could end up a few games away from the playoffs this season, and if that's the case, these matches will hurt.
