Despite the anticipated recruitments, the Houston Chronicle reported in June that Memorial Hermann had sacked 460 in 2018. Stokes spoke of "the uncertain environment of health care".
The system is expanding in other areas, such as Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.
Hinton said he did not know how the combined organization would rank at the national level, but that was not a determining factor.
"We will be a big organization, 73,000 employees," he said. "We want to convert that size into value for the people we serve, which is really our main goal."
