Soerjanto Tjahjono, chairman of the National Committee on Transportation Safety, said the investigators had reached the conclusion by analyzing the data downloaded from the recorder, one of the two "black boxes" of the aircraft.

Flight 610 crashed in the Java Sea, north of Jakarta, shortly after takeoff on 29 October. This is the first accident involving the Boeing 737 Max 8, the latest variant of the popular 737 single-aisle aircraft. The aircraft was delivered to major low-cost carriers in Asia in August.

The researchers are trying to locate the second black box, the cockpit voice recorder, which appears to rest under several feet of mud on the seabed.
